Doctors Said She Needed 2 Hip Replacements — She Did This Instead
By Shane Dowd , CES, CMP
Emily was 26 years old, couldn't sleep through the night, and was staring down the barrel of double hip surgery. Ten years later, she never got them. Here's what happened.
Every Night, The Same Pain
Emily used to go to bed every night not knowing how bad it was going to be.
She told me she's a side sleeper, and every time she rolled over, both hips would light up with pain. Every single night.
She was 26 years old, had been an athlete her whole life, swimming, running, even doing half marathons, and now she couldn't get through a night of sleep without her own body waking her up.

She went to the doctor, got the scans done, and the orthopedist told her she had labral tears on both sides and was going to need two hip replacements.
Two hip replacements. At 26. Let that sink in for a second.
She Did Everything That Was Supposed to Help
She went to the chiropractor. Helped a little, until it didn't anymore.
Physical therapy after that. A little better, but still not getting her where she needed to be.
She moved to Ohio, started a desk job, sat for long hours every day, and things just kept getting worse. Her glutes weren't firing. All the muscles around her hips were tightening up to compensate. And now she was stuck in this loop where the tighter everything got, the more it hurt, and the more it hurt, the tighter everything got.
A vicious circle with no exit.
She went back to the doctors. CT scan. Referred to a specialist. Surgery was next up.
She was on the verge of just doing it.
Then One Simple Google Search Changed Everything

Before committing to surgery she did a quick search for other options.
She found our Hip Fix™ Program online. A little over a hundred bucks. She was in grad school, working full time, completely overwhelmed, but she figured she didn't have much to lose.
Her husband found a lacrosse ball at the sports store for five dollars. She picked up a few tools. And every morning at 6AM she'd go through the exercises while reviewing her grad school notes at the same time.
Even while multitasking like that, within a few days she could feel it working.
Here's Why It Worked When Nothing Else Did
When a muscle has been in protective tension for years, you can't just stretch it. Your nervous system won't allow it.
You have to work the tissue first. Deep muscle massage to calm everything down and give the body a signal that it's safe to let go. The lacrosse ball on her glutes, the body work on her psoas and piriformis, it wasn't just loosening things up. It was telling her nervous system to stand down.
And once it did, the stretching actually started to work.

She told me,
"Everything was just so tight in there. Like the body was trying to heal itself and do what it could, but it was all just so tight."
After the massage and the stretching came the re-education exercises. That specific sequence, in that specific order, is what matters. The pain loop she'd been stuck in for years got broken.
Ten Years Later
Emily never got the surgeries.
She still has the labral tears. Those don't magically heal themselves. But the pain that used to wake her up every night, that made her dread going to sleep, is completely gone.
She runs now. Jogs on the treadmill regularly. Went through a whole pregnancy doing these exercises, emailed us to ask how to modify things, and never really stopped. She's got her favorites saved on her phone.
She told me,
"When friends are in similar situations I show them. I say, try this weird stretch and see how it feels."
Here’s the Heart of This Story
She went from being told she definitely needed double hip replacement surgery in her twenties to being pain free and moving well into her thirties.
Not from something extreme.
But from doing the right things, in the right order, consistently.
She started with a simple do-it-yourself program. Same exercises. Same sequence. The same routine she was doing at 6AM in grad school with a five dollar lacrosse ball and a notebook.
And it worked.
Which means the real question isn’t whether something can change.
It’s whether you’re using the right approach yet.
